How to Make a Star for Church Nativity Scene - Origami Method

The year has gone by fast. So fast that I couldn't believe we were already in the middle of the Advent season!

Over the last few years, the congregation size at the church has grown. And what used to be small tasks for one individual to complete have now turned into large projects. This is especially so since the congregation had to build a new church building 10 years ago to house a larger congregation size and now we are looking to double the size of this current structure again to accommodate even more people.

Yes, it is a very exciting time for our church that started out as a small gathering out in the country in a one room school house over 125 years ago. That is why I was very excited to see the new committees formed to help with projects and had the chance to join and head this year's newest one, the decorating committee.

It hasn't been easy coming up with ideas for each season and event at the church. I was trying to keep things about the same as they have been by using exiting decorations the church already had but adding to them to fill gaps and spaces and fix certain issues. For example, our nativity scene at church are small white figurines that now blend in with our white walls. A backdrop was needed preferably in a darker color (like navy blue) to help them standout.

With the new addition of the backdrop, we felt something was still missing. It quickly became clear that we needed a star. After all, we all know that the three wise men followed the star to get to Bethlehem. The problem was I needed a star quickly and we don't live in an area where we can just jump into a car and drive to our nearest shopping center to pick one up.

So, I did a little research and looked over the materials I had available. It became clear that the best star would need to be simple, easy to do, but still be large enough for the entire congregation to see. That is why I decided to make a star from paper and use a common five pointed star origami pattern. Please watch the video below to see how I did it!

I think the effect turned out amazing! The star has now been in front of the sanctuary for two full weeks and I have had many positive comments about it. This worked better than expected. Of course, we will be looking for a more permanent star in the future to take its place, but as a last minute item, it turned out great.

I hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching, and have a Merry Christmas!
