So, I went to my local Family Dollar store to get some last minute items I needed and also to browse new "all season" furnishings and decor for the bathroom and kitchen remodel work we have been doing. Little did I know that my store had just stocked all the fall season decor that morning. I saw this village set and resisted my horrible impulse to purchase. Well, I regretted it all night long. I went back to the store with my Mom to find that half of the sets were already gone. She said if I didn't buy the set, she would. Well, I love village sets more than her so...
Isn't this the neatest fall set ever! I love the farm theme. I just wish there were more options for buildings like a Christmas village set has. For instance, they could have had a chicken coop, a horse or old time tractor pulling a hay rack for those hay rides, apple trees to make an orchard, or even a small corn field. All the items I think of when I think fall are in this set, though. They feature pumpkins, fall leaves, and even pilgrims if you want to do the Thanksgiving look.
I am planning on using the set during the entire fall season from September through November. I will just add the pilgrims and cornucopia pieces after the Halloween season has passed. Crossing my fingers that next year, my store will have more pieces to add to my new collection.
Hope everyone has a bountiful Autumn!

How to Make a Star for Church Nativity Scene - Origami Method
The year has gone by fast. So fast that I couldn't believe we were already in the middle of the Advent season!
Over the last few years, the congregation size at the church has grown. And what used to be small tasks for one individual to complete have now turned into large projects. This is especially so since the congregation had to build a new church building 10 years ago to house a larger congregation size and now we are looking to double the size of this current structure again to accommodate even more people.
Yes, it is a very exciting time for our church that started out as a small gathering out in the country in a one room school house over 125 years ago. That is why I was very excited to see the new committees formed to help with projects and had the chance to join and head this year's newest one, the decorating committee.
It hasn't been easy coming up with ideas for each season and event at the church. I was trying to keep things about the same as they have been by using exiting decorations the church already had but adding to them to fill gaps and spaces and fix certain issues. For example, our nativity scene at church are small white figurines that now blend in with our white walls. A backdrop was needed preferably in a darker color (like navy blue) to help them standout.
With the new addition of the backdrop, we felt something was still missing. It quickly became clear that we needed a star. After all, we all know that the three wise men followed the star to get to Bethlehem. The problem was I needed a star quickly and we don't live in an area where we can just jump into a car and drive to our nearest shopping center to pick one up.
So, I did a little research and looked over the materials I had available. It became clear that the best star would need to be simple, easy to do, but still be large enough for the entire congregation to see. That is why I decided to make a star from paper and use a common five pointed star origami pattern. Please watch the video below to see how I did it!
I think the effect turned out amazing! The star has now been in front of the sanctuary for two full weeks and I have had many positive comments about it. This worked better than expected. Of course, we will be looking for a more permanent star in the future to take its place, but as a last minute item, it turned out great.
I hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching, and have a Merry Christmas!

Christmas 2015 - Setting Up My Christmas Village Set
So, I have slowly been setting up my Christmas decorations. By slowly, I mean I put up the tree one day, put the lights on it the next day, and put the ornaments on it the next day. Yes, that is slow. Well, for me anyway!
Today I finally made it to the village set. I was listening to some favorite Christmas tunes and working right along to get my display up. This display actually didn't make up at all last year. So, I wasn't sure if the lights were going to work or not. (Which is why you see me plugging the set in before I finish it!) I was happy to see that they all did work. There are two buildings I own that do not have lights in them at all. But, thats okay. It's not like a town is all lit up every night!
I think this set sits perfectly into my built in china cabinet. I also have a smaller set with more buildings and figurines that I like to put up, too. But, I will save that for another video!

How to Create a Fall Centerpiece
Fall is upon us and the chill in the air with the fallen leaves proves that Thanksgiving will soon be approaching. Of course, I have had my house decorated for the fall season for a while now. Actually, I decorate for fall as soon as school starts in September! I leave up the decorations until Thanksgiving and by the time Black Friday comes, my family is already urging me to decorate for Christmas. At least I get about three months worth of the fall look!
Sometimes people are unsure of how to decorate for fall with the back to school, Halloween, and Thanksgiving themes that come and go quickly. That is why I create a theme that can be easily switched up with the holidays by changing one or two pieces.
In this video tutorial, I have everything set up for Halloween. This has now changed with the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, which I will show you a picture of below. But first, the video!
This fall cluster of pumpkins, leaves, and candles really brings the warmth and color of the season into perspective, don't you think! It is also a very versatile centerpiece where you can change things around as you see fit. It is, in a way, interactive. Change where certain pieces sit and see if anyone notices! :) This happens in my house a lot!
So, I did mention in my video that a switch out the little plastic jack-o-lantern for pilgrims. The picture below will show you what I meant by that comment.
You can also see that I did change up the layout of the centerpiece too. This is a great example of how you can change things up! I did this to make it longer and more narrow so when Thanksgiving does come, we will have plenty of room to put our plates and glasses for the feast.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and if you create a centerpiece for fall please let me see it too! You can leave a link to your post down in the comments section. Also, if you have any questions, please leave me a comment, too!
Thank you and have a great day!

How to Make a Trick or Treat Bar
Okay, I am a sucker for candy bars! No, not just the chocolate bars every lady like me out there craves, a bar that is chock full of sugar bombs, hard candies, caramels, and brand name favorites! Yes, a candy buffet! And with Halloween here, who needs a better reason to make one? So, I dove in and created my own trick or treat bar for Halloween.
I also did something really special this year to appeal with all kids. The Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) came up with the "Teal Pumpkin Project," which is a nationwide initiative to promote nonfood items as treats instead of candy that can be tricky for parents to figure out if it is safe for their children to consume.
Being I was diagnosed with celiac disease a few years back, I am always on top of any news that allows people with food allergies and intolerances to have more fun and relax during the holidays. So, I made sure to make my treats nonfood treats and here is a video on how I did that!

It's not Christmas yet!
Have you been walking around the house seeing Christmas carols? My family has been doing that, especially after all the snow we got this past week. "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" outside and "Baby it's cold outside" really, really cold. But, I am not ready to go "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" just yet. I think we all miss out on those beautiful Thanksgiving songs that get passed over when the majority of people hop from halloween to Christmas. Yes, those Thanksgiving songs! Most of you are probably like what songs are those? Well here is a whole playlist I created of some of my favorite Thanksgiving day songs along with theme music to play during your dinner feast. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbfnUtUVrEFoh35lZvnbCowO68BGGNf1y
Some songs listed are:
- We Gather Together by Paul McCandless
- When Cheer Fills The Hearts of My Friends by Square Check Tune
- There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays by The Carpenters (Yes, this is a Thanksgiving song not Christmas!)
- Thanksgiving by George Winston
- Over the Rive and Through the Woods from Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
- Thanksgiving Theme by Vince Guaraldi Trio
- Come Ye Thankful People a Christian Hymn
- All Creatures of Our God and King by Tenore
- I've Got Plenty to Be Thankful For by Bing Crosby
- Count Your Blessings (Instead of Sheep) by Bing Crosby
- Thankful by Josh Groban
- Give Thanks a Christian Hymn
So, get into some Thanksgiving cheer when you are busy preparing a meal in the kitchen and sing to your hearts delight! Christmas will come soon enough to hum those melodies.

2 Weeks Until Thanksgiving?!
I cannot believe how the time has flown by this past month. That and how much the weather has changed. I was raking leaves on Sunday and Monday morning we had over a half foot of snow covering the ground. My roses were still blooming! But, it is what it is.
Because of this shift in cold weather, I turned my attention to holiday baking. Helps warm up the house. That is when I took full notice of the calendar and Thanksgiving meal schedule. It is exactly 2 weeks until the big feast and there is a lot of work and planning to do starting with the meal.
For those of you who are new to this blog, you can check out my Thanksgiving page to view recipes and last year's menu. I am planning on making a few alterations this year. First, I am making homemade sparkling cider to compliment the dinner. I am switching out the salad recipe. And, I am toying with the idea of making a green bean casserole.
Once the menu planning is complete, it is time to shop. I first rummage through the pantry and freezer making sure I know what ingredients I already have on hand down to the cooking spray and spices. Then, I make a list of what I still need to buy. Make sure you review the grocery store ads for weekly deals and check online for coupons!
This morning, I finished all the above and am ready to hit the stores. See you there!
